Mark Fast and Mary Kantranzou's Mini Mania

By Amah-Rose McKnight-Abrams published on Saturday, 19 September

This sunny Saturday morning and the great and good gathered outside Westminster University for the Mark Fast and Mary Kantranzou shows as part of Topshop New Gen.

An air of excitement surrounds Mark Fast following his storming success at On/Off last season. The hall was packed as the lights went down and as the first model appeared on the catwalk wrapped in a skin tight crocheted mini dress, it was clear we this would not disappoint.

Fast’s trademark mini's were a main feature of this show the ultra skinny, ultra tight knits flattered the female form.

As with Fast’s A/W show earlier in the year the high level of workmanship sculpts the body so crochet becomes almost fishnet making this the sexiest knitwear collection around. Sticking with the dresses formula, which brought him such success last time round, now with much finer detail and lots of beautiful ruffles around the hips, the statement was all in the shapes.

The use of a plus size model to open the show was a great idea in terms of the use of real women on the catwalk, though one could not help but think the pretty frilled dresses would have worn but better on a curvier frame yet, they were hanging off the shoulder blades of the tiniest models in the show.

Mary Kantranzou followed immediately with a shock of colour. Pucci-like swirls on acid printed silks and higher than high shine fabrics, sculptured bows and holograms strutted down the runway to ‘She’s a Lady’ by Pulp, bringing out the early nineties dirty glamour of this collection. Her trademark prints were the main feature of the show but now, with a surreal twist the images and shapes working more with the sculptured pieces or highlighted with simples shift dresses.
