Sea Shelles and Sailors from Ioannisdimitrousis

By Imogen Eveson published on Friday, 18 September

Greek born designer ioannisdimitrousis starts the celebrations off with salty bang with his latest collection, Naughtica.

Inspired by American artist Paul Cadmus’ paintings where sailors return from sea to a flock of floozies, ioannisdimitrousis gathered a crop of boys and girls to tell the story.

“It’s about partying: the sailors and the naughty girls waiting for them,” the designer explains backstage post-show tpo jotta, “The theme is marine and nautical, although a bit abstract too.”

Cue girls in tailored crop jackets with boxy shorts, shirts tied at the waist in shimmering fabrics; boys in sequined off-the-shoulder numbers and vice versa.

It’s a collection of contrasts and as the show progresses, so we fall into a nightscape with sinuous floor length gowns and cocktail dresses. Fishnet dresses constructed from crocheted silk are encrusted with iridescent sequins that resemble barnacles, in black, cream and a medley of the two: sirens tangled in a net.

For ioannisdimitrousis, inspiration can be sourced from anywhere, “as long as it stimulates the five senses,” he declares. This collection, with its old fashioned jaunty soundtrack, succeeded in conjuring up an indulgent, woozy night on dry land.

Only the use of sparkly tartan stood out as an anomaly, but then again in the designer’s own words, “it’s not what you’d expect from a marine collection.”
