British Fashion Takes A Bow

By Imogen Eveson published on Wednesday, 16 September
Sartorial celebrations began early as Tank Magazine hosted the launch of Hywel Davies’ latest book, British Fashion Designers, aptly enough at London's own, Liberty.

Style luminaries including milliner Stephen Jones and fashion historian Judith Watt were treated to cocktails, with Davies on hand to sign copies of his third offering.

Having penned 100 New Fashion Designers and Modern Menswear, the freelance fashion writer and Central Saint Martins lecturer honed in on the UK to create a paean to the diverse range of design talent our fair isle has to offer.

Focusing on those who have resonated internationally since 2000, Davies gathered a roll call of designers young and old - including Luella, John Galliano, Paul Smith and Dame Vivienne – and grilled them on what it means to be British.

“The process started by coming up with a list of designers that I thought were radical and innovative,” explains Davies on the unenviable task of knowing where to begin. “Everyone had to have a distinctive design signature and have a clear message. Everyone I contacted said yes so I was really lucky - so the process from there was quite smooth.”

The launch coincides with London Fashion Week’s silver anniversary and the buzz around British Fashion has never been louder.

“It’s bigger, more diverse and stronger now,” says Davies. “Fashion appeals to everyone and if you really think about the influence of British Fashion - avoiding all they hype - it is quite amazing.”

So get your hands on a copy of British Fashion Designers and know your Deacons from your Goldins, before joining jotta on our exhaustive tour of LFW.

And what of Davies' tip for a sure-fire show stealer? “Christopher Kane is always a highlight.”
