I am interested in the point where the real and the imagined conjoin; the attraction for me is looking at the simplicity of the interaction between the two, or using a simplistic method to grasp something otherworldly or strange.
I just have a great passion for film; my concepts, and way of seeing, were most likely born out of my experiences of watching film, so they came together I guess. A film is also so easy and enjoyable to express within the imagination. I find that whatever work I am making, even if it is not a moving image, is sort of imagined through a kind of cinematic moment, cinema is a kind of ideal.
The interesting part comes for me in thinking about how to make an image once one is found. Film is exciting because it can be quite unpredictable and risky at times, you don’t ever know exactly what you are going to get. Where you fail in doing one thing you can be surprised in lots of other ways. Often new processes and ideas come about through noticing accidents and incidental effects, you have to be open to the unexpected.
I like to think that both space and concept are integral to each other, and I try to practice this in any way possible. However, I think I have quite a loose and flexible approach to displaying work that definitely varies, but I also like to think of exhibitions as possible film sets in a way, the same objects can transpose into different scenes with different effects. I think it’s important at this time, not to take your self too seriously, or to limit your scope without risks; the process should be democratic.
My piece for Land Without A Map is a 16mm film titled All That Is Alive Merely Evaporates. The film displays both the negative and positive of the image and was made by masking the camera gate but for a small hole through which the film was shot. The title is taken from a recent quote made by a Russian General in describing the effects of the most powerful bomb ever made.
