The Hospital Club is once again throwing open its doors to welcome a new batch of creatives eager to tap into the wealth of knowledge and experience the Club has to offer. Until tomorrow night we have to keep our lips sealed about the 2010 winners of the Creatives In Residence, but you could be there to toast (your free Bombay Saphire cocktail) to them. Read on to find out how.
The Creatives in Residence programme sees talented individuals from the worlds of film, music, fashion, theatre and opera, visual art and architecture teamed up with industry experts from the same creative field and offered support in all areas of their chosen career.
A judging panel comprising of leading inspirational figures across the arts including Maggie Ellis, Head of Production from Film London; Michael Hayden, Festival Programmer, BFI London Film Festival and Michael McCabe, Executive Producer of the hit musical Wicked have selected the young creatives.
The programme, launched in 2009, capitalises on The Hospital Club’s position at the heart of London’s creative community and its extensive and collaborative network of members. The scheme stands out because as well as mentoring and coaching, each individual has access to leading industry figures across the full breadth of specialism, from publicists, management and A&R people, to lawyers, media and other artists within the field. In addition, the club also commission, help produce and showcase the work of each of the residents, by offering them free access to the club’s facilities as well as support from the club’s expert team of staff. Facilities at The Hospital Club include state of the art music and television production studios, an art gallery and a cinema.
Fashion designer Nova Dando (who styled the imageabove for Selfridges) was one of the 2009 residents and has spent the last year styling all La Roux’s videos, photo shoots and her US tour. During her time as a resident Nova was given access to The Hospital Club’s TV Studio to showcase her latest collection in a video piece. A stone’s throw away from Somerset House, the event was attended by a number of high profile fashion journalists fresh from London Fashion Week shows. Nova also received advice on everything from book keeping to PR.
“My main goals during my residency were to work with an artist as their ongoing stylist and to also work internationally." Said Nova, "What The Hospital Club really helped me with in regards to these goals was to make a plan for how to achieve these things during my residency and to also make plans of where I saw myself and my business in five years time. I’ve gained a lot more confidence in my work, made a clearer plan of what I want to do and, over the year demand for what I do has increased.”
Emerging stage director Lisa Spirling came to the programme having already established herself as a bright young thing within the UK’s theatre scene. As well as having access to rehearsal spaces at The Hospital Club, Lisa received mentoring from Bush Theatre artistic director Josie Rourke and worked closely with casting director Gary Davy. Together, they developed Lisa’s work before showcasing it in front of an invited audience of key industry players including producers, director and arts council officers.
Other Creative’s in the 2009 programme included musician Vera Bohl, visual artist Roxanne Borujerdi, film maker Simon Burrill, musician Alex Nikiporenko and graphic designers Antoine Choussat and Zamir Antonio.
