Three successive events in London, Istanbul and Berlin explore the influence of Turkish migration on contemporary art.
Three exhibitions have been timed to occur one after the other in London, Berlin and Istanbul, tracing the path of Turkish emmigration across Europe.
For the London wing of Journeys With No Return, poetic human experiences pile up which build themes of migration between Turkey, Germany and Britain (did you know, for instance, that many British Turks travelled here from Germany- and many German foods are available in Londn's Turkish stores?).
The shows are inspired by the book of poems Journeys With No Return by Turkish writer and political figure, Nâzim Hikmet. Located in the East End, the exhibition's location at A Foundation has been selected to highlight the historical waves of Turkish immigration that has seen shifting demographics in nearby Hackney and Haringey.
Expect gold rings, amnesia, concrete carpets, diptychs and a silent video of the exchange of second hand clothing between the UK and USA.
Journeys With No Return opened alongside the 11th Istanbul Biennial at the Akbank Cultural Centre, Istanbul in September 2009 and will be presented in Berlin in June 2010.
