Whispered fictional spaces; counterculture movements; historical speakeasies and obscurist conspiracy theories: the SOUTH TOWER SOCIAL programme touches upon all of this in a converted carpet store, right in the pulsing heart of mythological Southwark.
The Old Mayfair Carpet Gallery is a new pop-up space in London's southern district, founded by three artists striving to exhibit emerging solo and group artists from the local areas.
The opening exhibition, SOUTH TOWER SOCIAL, intends to invoke a latent spatial unease and a 'veneer of duplicity', referring to 'forced resorts' and 'whispered fictional no-where spaces'.
Operating part-time at the end of the working week, SOUTH TOWER SOCIAL will be a place of opportunity for emerging London artists and curators, where they will be able to stage regular performances, film screenings and interior and exterior interventionist installations.
A full calendar of the events and happenings will be published on Janurary 14th, along with a group installation and private view (from 7pm).
So far, free weekly events have been confirmed as being hosted by the following: Sophie Brown and Cathrine Evelid, Blue Curry, Tom Hickman, South London Warlords, Grace Schofield, Coin Street Heritage Project, Irene Revell, South East London Folklore Society, and Gail Pickering; many more will be confirmed by Januarfy 14th.
