Haunted rooms, delirious forms, blasted architecture and cinematic dreamscapes – The Surreal House features a host of artists, architects and film makers including Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Giacometti, René Magritte, Man Ray, Joseph Cornell and Maya Deren through to more contemporary figures, among them; Louise Bourgeois, Rebecca Horn, Edward Kienholz and Rem Koolhaas.

The Brief

Submit a piece of work to the jotta website relating to the theme of Surrealism, incorporating motifs from the films in the Barbican The Surreal Film House season; films which explore the myriad trails of Surrealist thought by visionary filmmakers including Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, Maya Deren, David Lynch and Silent French Cinema that followed in the wake of L'âge d'or.

The best entries of each week of the competition will be displayed on the Barbican’s The Surreal Film House competition web-page.

The final winner and ten runners up will be selected by Barbican art gallery curator Alona Pardo, Emma Watkins of Barbican Film, and jotta curator Ellie Greig.

Prize

·     Winner: A physical exhibition in the Barbican Centre, from July 26.  £100 voucher for Cass Art. The winner’s work will also be showcased on jotta and Barbican websites.

·     10 Runners-up: A pair of tickets to The Surreal House exhibition plus feature article in jotta magazine.

·     All entrants: 20% discount on The Surreal Film House programme.
