Zines Zines Zines! More about the publications featured in Absolut London
By Millie Ross –  05.04.2011

While centrepiece of this exhibition was the data visualisation map – an interactive map of London which takes the very core of zine culture – to express an individual opinion- and visualises these words across a London map, this chronological exhibition of self publishing charted the history of this subversive form. Celebrating the best London zines of past and present, alongside a selection of iconic international titles.

From the 60s underground magazine OZ and the punk fanzines of the 1970s, including Jon Savage’s The Secret Public, Jamie Reid's Suburban Press and Paul Morley’s ‘Girl Trouble’, to the self published works by Billy Childish.

You'll see the first zine to feature spine, Vague, a satirical take on Vogue, published 1975- 1984 which features a cover made by Jamie Reid of Suburban Press and creator of the infamous Sex Pistols' 'Never Mind The Bollocks' cover art.

VILE magazine and Ray Johnson's handmade postage stamps illustrate the dialogue between  New York artists and London artists such as Cossi Fanny Tuti, Genesis P. Orridge and Robin Crozier, as well as Mark Pawson, whose personal zine archive we also exhibit.

See some of the defining titles from the Queer zine scene including Bruce La Bruce, DADDY zine and Dean Sameshima's YOUNG MEN AT PLAY to contemporary queer zines like BOYO (made by former Art Director of Homme Plus and i_D Patrick Waugh), and internationally acclaimed artist and exhibitionist Terence Koh.

Zines are also demonstrated to be an additional space for reflecting creative pursuits, by the likes of musicians Kim Gordon and Kid Acne, and filmmaker Harmony Korine, as well as London artists Stephen Gill, Craig Atkinson (Cafe Royal Books) and collectives Off Modern, Lucky PDf and Banner Repeater who use print.  And we pay close attention to the thriving graphic zine community, where designers and illustrators utliise the medium for promoting their work independently of any other channels.

Zines which display a whimsical odes to London  include Smoke, Hackney Love Stories, Kebabulous, Hackney Rag as well Mark Pawson's impressive archive of zines from London. Zines about the future - LAN zine and Tomorrow's Thought's Today, and of course a plethora of personal zines from individuals from all over London.

London zine collections and libraries Zine Swap, Banner Repeater, Publish and Be Damned and independent publishers such as Pogo books, Extrapool, Off Modern, Landfill, Ditto Press, Nieve have all contributed. As well as very early issues of Dazed & Confused, which began life in ‘zine format, and still retains its DIY, independent ethos today.
