Introduction
Latitude is a 4-day music festival that takes place in Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk, England. As well as a comprehensive bill of music artists, the festival also offers a well curated selection of theatre, art, comedy, cabaret, poetry, politics, dance and literature. The festival appeals to adults and children alike plus it caters well for parents with young children.
Every year a water projection installation takes place on the site’s lake.

The Platform
The water projections are principally very simple.
In the middle of the Latitude lake will sit a floating motorised pump. This pump blasts the water from the lake into a circular metal disc, which disperses the water into a 10m wide wall of water. The water droplets are so fine that they catch and refract the light projected on them.

The projections begin around 10pm and last for 3 hours. During this time, festival goers will travel back to their campsite via a bridge that crosses the lake. This is the prime viewing spot.

The screen is back projected and the visuals are controlled using VJ software.

The Brief
For this year’s water projection show we want you to explore the theme of ‘Back to Front’.

Back to Front can be used to describe something literally or metaphorically. As a phrase it can be used in any number of situations. Explore it through a narrative, abstract visual medley, Lionel Richie cover or anyway you see fit. The brief is completely free to interpretation.

The artists have freedom to create any number of films at any duration as long as they loop.

> A brief synopsis/storyboard of what you intend to do
> Images we can reference that bring your idea to life, preferably created by you though not essential if they're not.
> Some links to your past work

Fee
The Latitude project is a project everyone does for the love of it. It is an arts based project and is wholly paid for by Festival Republic (owners of Latitude). There is no 'big brand' behind it and no-one does more than cover their costs. We do it because the chance to play with the medium of water in this context is so rare and lots of fun.

The fee for each work is £130.

Every artist will be provided with a visual record of the performance.

Additional Information
When choosing what to create, there are a few factors that the artists should take into consideration.

Loop Ability
Whether it’s a 60sec piece of footage or a 2 second animation, the end and beginning of each piece should flow seamlessly.

Clean, Bold & Simple
Due to the fact that the screen is made up of constantly moving water droplets, some images appear to lack definition. Therefore when your image is bold, bright and clean, it tends to have more impact.

Negative Space
Like in most projections, blacks are not luminous and no light is thrown from the projector. This means the screen is not visible in areas of black. This allows the artist to dictate the frame of their content and even have images floating above the water.

3D
The natural depth of the screen (around 3ft) can also give the images a 3 dimensional look. This can be exaggerated by actually projecting 3D animation, which often creates a holographic illusion.

Reflection
Naturally, the lake reflects the image being projected. The artists can explore this to great effect.
