As an artist and technician Ciaran Begley has developed a number of works based around slide projectors. As a technician for art exhibitions he engages in large scale museum installations involving a vast array of projection equipment and gadgetry, including the Tate Modern's work by the pioneering Fluxus artist Gustav Metzger, "Liquid Crystal Environment" (1965-88), which uses five slide projectors, liquid crystals and glass slides.

The workshop will involve a detailed dissection of a slide projector. Through the dissection of the machine, Ciaran will demonstrate how a slide projector works, how it can be serviced and fixed as well as exploring the hidden creative potential within the inner mechanisms and the potential for subversive adaptation to produce new art works.

Workshop Outline:

Basics of the slide projector: view stock footage slides to demonstrate what slide projectors are and how they are used them to display the work of artists professionally.

Slide and projector maintenance: inside a projector, using the mirror and how to fix issues.
A look at lenses and what they do.

Ciaran will show his own work and techniques of subversting and reinterpretation the technology through images.

Practical: We'll look at "Liquid Crystal Environment" by Gustaf Metzger. As part of the Tate's time based media conservation team Ciaran was involved in the preparation and testing of the work as well as the maintenance of the equipment. 

Practical: We'll use white slide projections using the lenses, mirrors and objects available to create a basic light based installation / composition.

Discussion of the experience of technology based art from the position of a technician and artist.
