Craig M. Edwards’ practice is distinctive for its critical interrogation of the overarching structures that govern and construct contemporary British culture and identity. His most recent body of work, metro/land (2008), continues to interrogate the relationship between the urban and the rural and presents a series of photographs of archetypal urban identities that appear out of place in their picturesque surroundings. The series takes its name from the area where the photographs were made: the north-western suburbs of London. In the early part of the twentieth century, in its annual publication Metroland, the Metropolitan Railway Company marketed heavily the area as a rural haven for the commuter who could .....
