We finally got to see examples of everyone's work at the Immersion event and poster exhibition. It was fantastic to see everyone's ambitions refined and articulated onto paper. Of the many posters displayed, we did have a few favourites, such as Tatiana Handal's with her beautiful jewellery, Georgina Potier's photograph was brilliant. Jotta Blog editor Calum could have at least smiled for his photograph, however! Who's work caught your eye? Let us know!

Saturday saw the launch of Feasts Of India, a beautiful recipe book created by Mridu Thanki, illustrator Sandra De Matos and immersionite/graphic designer/editor Calum Ross. The official launch, held in Edinburgh was a huge success with practically every copy being sold in an hour! The event featured an artists talk with Calum who discussed the creative concept behind the making of the book, a poetry reading session from Gordon Peters and a book signing session too - along with lots of freshly prepared food straight out of the book! Feasts Of India is already in North and South America, India and New Zealand as well as the UK and is available to purchase at Amazon, WordPower and at Blackwells. To find out more about this beautiful book, go to Calum's blog: http://oneadaydesign.blogspot.com/

Immersion participants are currently preparing themselves for their presentations this Thursday at the Innovation Centre. The Brief: A five minute presentation which answers the question "why should you want to work with me?". For the past three months, the Immersionites have been given all the tools to develop their influencing and presentation skills. The group of graduates, who's creative backgrounds range from ceramics and fine art, to fashion and graphic design, will be marked on Coherence, Credibility and Enthusiasm in front of a panel of industry guides. The participants will then be given feedback which will encourage, support and inform them on their strengths and weaknesses which they can take with them and put into action in real life employer/client situations. Following the morning session of presentations, a networking lunch and poster exhibition will be held in the gallery space from 1 to 2.30pm.

A reminder for you all from Jeraint Hazan's workshop yesterday morning on INFLUENCING skills. Some key points to remember when presenting: you need to be CONVINCING, KNOWLEDGEABLE, CONFIDENT, MAKE EYE CONTACT, have POSITIVE BODY LANGUAGE, COMMUNICATE in an APPROPRIATE WAY which your AUDIENCE WILL UNDERSTAND. LISTEN to your audience, whether they be future clients or employees and be CURIOUS..and never ask closed questions. How are you? you ok!?

A very informative session this week. Magnus Long's suggestion for having a simple photo portfolio rather than the chunky A3 folder seems to have inspired many of you to re-consider how you present your work to others. For those of you who are considering the Photo Portfolio option, head on over to www.photobox.co.uk Prices are reasonable and you get a variety of sizes and choice of matte or glossy finishes.

How many of you received one of these postcards at last weeks 'networking' session? For those of you who didn't, this is the calling card for Amber James, an enterprising young designer who set up her own small lable Bambooteak in 2005. Having initially studied and specialised in Graphic Design, Amber has honed her skills in screen printing, etching and letterpress and has applied them to a whole variety of mediums. A browse through her online shop at Bambooteak, you will come across product design, craft, books, textiles and original artwork for sale. Is there anything this girl can't do? Fly perhaps...?

Another great session today at the Innovation Center. Our mentors gave valuable insight (both with rather polar opposite experiences) into how they Market themselves. You should all be feeling much more positive and energized and ready to start marketing yourselves! Use today's session as inspiration for the upcoming networking event. One topic which kept popping up throughout the session was that of BLOGS. For those of you who don't have one or are wondering just how exactly to go about creating one, have a look at Immersion participants Calum Ross, Annabel Johnson and Cherry Hurren's blogs on blogspot. Their links are: for calum - oneadaydesign.blogspot.com/ for annabel go to missannabeldee.blogspot.com/ and for cherry check out cherryhurren.blogspot.com/

In case you had missed them, contemporary fashion craft product designer Cherry Hurren's 24 beautifully handcrafted lifesize dolls were on display in the Knightsbridge branch of Harvey Nichols. Sadly they are gone for now, as the christmas displays are going up, but the dolls will be touring around the rest of the UK, so check your local Harvey Nics!
My personal favourite has to be the silver doll in the Alexander McQueen on the first floor down escalator, but I also have a soft spot for the one in the Proenza Schouler animal print dress. If it's possible, Cherry, I would like a life-size version of myself, preferably with the designer gear attached, thanks.

Making it ethically in China – for fashion and textile designers, Own-it
When: 28.10.09 at 18:00
Where: Asia House, 63 New Cavendish Street, London , W1G 7LP
Sourcing materials or manufacturing in China should be considered seriously if you want to compete in a global market and keep production cost low. Many do not think that China should be your first port of call if you have decided to build your brand on a sustainable business model in which worker's rights are recognised, the materials used are environmentally friendly and your carbon footprint is as small as possible. However, China has started to acknowledge the need for sustainable business practices in the production of textiles and clothing, and has set up the Sustainable Fashion Business Consortium in Hong Kong in 2008 to promote just that.
Own-it, Ethical Fashion Forum and Creative Connexions have invited a panel of experts to discuss the current situation in China, how designers can source manufacturers and material that meets their ethical standards and how they can monitor compliance. A lawyer will speak about important clauses in manufacturing or licensing contracts concerning IP rights and confidentiality, as well as what to do when you are faced with counterfeits that are cheap, unethically sourced and damage your good name.
Presentations will take place from 6-8pm followed by drinks and networking until 9pm. Admission is free, however places are limited. To register and reserve your place online visit: http://www.own-it.org/events/making-it-ethically-in-china-a-practical-guide-for-fashion-and-textile-designers

Hi Danny
Good idea creating a facebook group, its not a case of 'taking over from Jotta, facebook is the biggest network and the one most people usesocially, we all have facebook groups here at CSM. Jotta is just for creative proffessionals to profile themselves to industry partners. we will also set up a group email so you can all communicate directly with each other. I see you have made the facebook group 'private' i am leaving the Immersion group 'public for now, and will just kick out any 'weired members of the public'!! if the group wants to i can make it "semi private" Cheers Tim

Catherine Marche, 10/10/2009 @ 07:52
Hi everyone. I've just started a Facebook group called Immersion 2009. I'm not trying to take over from Jotta, as I think it's a really great site, but I've spoken to a lot of people who already use Facebook and just thought I'd be proactive. If people feel uncomfortable with what I've done, I can always remove the group. Just so you know, I've created it so that it's closed (meaning that the administrator - currently me - has to approve applications to join), but I only did this to stop weird people from the general public joining up for no reason. However, I'm sure that if you know of any extra contacts who might be able to contribute something, people would still welcome them.
As I say, I hope that this is okay, but if not just let me know.
All the best - have a good weekend, and good luck to those doing exhibitions!

This is a photo from a launch I organised for my new book Street Artists: The Complete Guide at the Pure Evil Gallery in Shoreditch. Pure Evil was one of the artists we profiled in the book and the launch coincided with his solo show at the gallery. I mainly work online to find photographers for the books we publish – this was the first live event we've ever had and I found it really useful as a way of meeting the people I've only ever been in touch with by email, and also as a reason to get in touch with people, say thank you to them (we put free drinks on!) and a way of creating content for our website/blog. I'd be really interested in hearing about other live events/exhibitions people from the Immersion group have organised to help promote their work, and also if anyone would be interested in collaborating on other live events/shows. It would be great to read about things people are planning or have done on here. Thanks, Ellie

Hi everyone. I just tried to upload an audio documentary about Guide Dogs for the Blind. This is now over a year old (published May 2008) and has a couple of issues due to technical and time difficulties, but it is my most recent piece of audio work (not so good)! I hope it uploaded okay, and that you enjoy it if you take a look (I can convert it to MP3 if the WMA format poses a problem). Any comments, negative or positive, will be gratefully received and taken on board.
Sadly I haven't worked out how to check out other people's work yet - is that where the lightbox fits in? If so, I will be unable to use it, as it seems to require the use of a mouse, but please feel free to send things to me by email at

Immersion and Jotta join forces to help creative graduates…….
We had kind of hoped this was the case, and now The Hospital and The Independent have confirmed it by naming jotta the third most influential established business in the Arts and Design category of the Hospital Club 100 list.
Drawn up in conjunction with The Independent, the annual awards for the most important figures in the media and creative industries included art world A-listers such as designer Stella Mccartney, director Chris Nolan, and the late playwright Harold Pinter.
jotta swooped in at 3rd place hot on the heels of winner Antony Gormley. Biting the dust of such a hugely successful artist doesn’t taste half bad, but next time we hope it will be us on the top plinth!
Read The Independent article here
