Handmade & Bound - the affordable London book art and zine fair
By Jane Trustram –  22.11.2010

Sunday saw the return of Handmade & Bound, the affordable London book art and zine fair at the St Aloysius Social Club.
The St Aloysius Social Club was the perfect venue with its vintage charm and unique style. I arrived soon after the fair had opened and it was already buzzing with crowds, and tables were beautifully laid out with zines, books, prints and cupcakes.

A few favourites were:
Adrian Giddings' 'Necessary Cutbooks' - sketchbooks with 20% removed from the covers in a variety of ways, the 20% saving being passed on to the purchaser as well. A clever and fun comment on today's society.

Part of a collective made up from foundation course tutors at UCA Canterbury, Andy Malone's series of altered Observer’s books, made by cutting away sections of the pages to expose the illustrations, were very striking.

Simon Goode's new book based on a found postcard with just the mysterious phrase 'the sun did shine here' on it, the book is a concertina of cut out skies from vintage postcards, beautifully presented and crafted.

The verdict? Print is most definitely not dead.
