Antria Pelekanou Artists Statement My work explores the principles, limits and possibilities of painting through multifarious picture making, aiming to reassert the relevancy of painting within the art market and modern society. I do not believe in the validity of any single way of working and so inconsistency in style as principle of style has become core to my practice. This robust approach to painting offers a freedom that far exceeds that of working within a singular signature style. My practice implements painterly strategies that endorse the expansion of my painting knowledge through the exploration of gesture, fracture and imprint. The painting plane offers seemingly infinite variations and discovering the potential of this plane is central to my practice. Abstraction offers the experience of mythification and spectacularisation through its mechanism to induce detachment from representation whilst simultaneously informing the invisible meaning of reality. I began a multifarious approach after the realisation that my ability to create abstract paintings came from the prerequisite knowledge attained through represented forms. Consequently, this gave birth to an oeuvre rooted in both abstraction and representation. The freedom to oscillate between representation and abstraction allows for the production of unconfined picture making. Intentionally I do not categorise my work into series as this swiftly creates motifs and notions of predictability. Such mechanisms are in place to ensure that the longevity of my principle aims.
