I am interested in the merging and mutation of environments, spaces and things, exploring and permeating the borderline between the real and the imagined, the point of metamorphosis, cataclysm, when matter comes alive, beauty staggers in, and dreams crawl over you. I hope for the work to have a connection with the imagination of the viewer; I entice them into a kind of wandering of consciousness, in which they may generate their own interpretations or narratives. There are components that hint to narratives, I hope for them to reshuffle within the viewers’ imagination. I am more interested in the periphery of a narrative or story, then in storytelling as such. One can sometimes sense a character, or an internalised perspective. Everything is based upon something experienced or once dreamt or fantasised, but through the fog of memory. These things are distant and old reflections, expressed as the briefest of desires. The bold and makeshift quality of the work reflects its’ expressive nature, though if there is a fantasy there I also wish to root it to the ground. It is the trace or veil within the illusion, the moment of hesitation between the real and the fictional that I find intriguing. Within my films I layer and expose sections of images over one another, the processes reminiscent of those used in early vaudeville cinema, surrealist films and analogue science fiction film. Both the ephemeral nature and physicality of film is something I am trying to grasp and delve into.
