Ruth Babajide was born and raised in Old Street, London and after finishing her A Levels in a catholic girls convent school in east London, she moved to Buckinghamshire to study graphic design and advertising. But after a year on the course, she felt that it was not the right course for her and wanted to do a course that would involve making products in three dimension. She decided to pursue her love of art and design by doing a foundation course at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2005 and in 2009 she graduated with a first class honours degree in Ceramic Design. With an immense amount of positive feedback at the dereee show on ASIKO which is a collection of ceramic storage gift jars that connects both her West African and British heritage together and raises issues of identity; Ruth decided to set up a company called MERBI Ceamic Designs Ltd and further develop the products. The Asiko collection re-launched at the end of October 2009 at the Islington Contemporary Art and Design Fair and is featured in Beautiful Kitchens Magazine Dec/ Jan 2010 issue. The collection will soon be sold in a few retail stores in London and Dorset. Merbi focuses on designing and producing giftware, tableware and other accessories for the home; and the design philosophy remains the same which is to continue to encourage and engage people with other cultures through the use of their products.
