My work stems from constructions that I imagine as fragmented worlds. Snippets of experiences and images come together in a hovering dream reminiscent of their original context. In an ever-shifting world, the spaces we inhabit are constantly contested. Where change rules and a vast stream of information and images bombard societies, “second spaces” emerge. “Second spaces”, constructed places with a certain degree of artificiality where individuals seek another chance, a different perspective, or a new experience, are in fact about the fantasy of escape. My work comments on the double side of the fantasy that underlies these fictive realities. Created by a complex process of combining found imagery of existing constructed places or “second spaces”, images are pulled from the internet, magazines, films, and personal photographs, then edited and mixed to create small preparatory assemblages portraying a new imagined space. Whilst utilising the fundamental elements of “second spaces”, my constructions defy their most important aspect: the principle of pleasure and escape. One is faced with a setting where everything seems possible and yet nothing is about to happen. Unlike the fairytale worlds of film and television that directly extract from reality and record objectively in real time according to a real script my works remain removed from the reality that they once existed within. Time is suspended, meaning is manipulated and artificial light creates an enveloping environment that excludes nature. We are submerged into a claustrophobic, uncertain, and uncomfortable setting; revealing the deceitful aspects of “second spaces” which can only provide temporary and fragile escape from our shifting world.
