My work uses narratives of dysfunctionality, failure and domesticity through a mainly sculpture and object based practice. By taking the prescribed function or ideal of existing domestic objects/commodities, I construct or re-invent my own prototypes using common DIY and “off the shelf” materials. They act as part parody of the English tradition of the garden shed inventor (carefully hand manufactured, considered) and part critique of the failed modernist vision of grand design. The humour contained within this parody, often with a darker domestic-based personal narrative, plays an important part in this critique for me. And, beneath the humour of their destined failure, they aim to question exactly what the purpose is in their very manufacture. Recipient of the Clifford Chance/University of the Arts London Sculpture Award 2008, recent selected exhibitions include Affluenza, Clereknwell, London (2009), Fault Line, The Nunnery, Bow Arts Trust, London (2009), Short Fall, Hand and Heart Gallery, Nottingham (2009).

A message from jotta : If you're in London this week join curatorial collective Five Story Projects as they present a series of events at The David Roberts Foundation. A collaborative exchange between artists about the science of change and our preserved notion of reality, the first of three events will consist of a film screening and a talk by Susan MacWilliam, who recently represented Northern Ireland at the Venice Biennale 2009. See http://www.jotta.com/magazine/outabout/474/the-object-of-the-attack for more info. Thanks jotta.
