BLURB | Unbinding the Book

Unbinding The Book will be exhibited as part of London Art Book Fair at The Whitechapel Gallery on 26-28 September.

Indie publishing platform Blurb and visual arts studio Jotta have commissioned nine artists and designers to create original books or book installations that will celebrate the art of books, book-making and illustrated story telling. Exhibiting in Europe and North America, Unbinding the Book brings together the work of practicing artists, recent graduates and a new generation of creatives in order to change preconceptions of who can be an author and what a book can be.

Pushing the boundaries of how books can be experienced, artists will experiment with the way in which text and image can evoke a narrative, whilst bringing to life the materiality, form and physicality of books. Within this, artists will explore a number of themes, such as the ethereal nature of print, our relationship to books and the way in which they function, book production in a digital age and the democratisation of print.

From Futurism to Fluxus, books have always been crucial in the development of conceptual art, Unbinding the Book is a project and exhibition that looks to contribute to the continuation of this tradition.
The artists involved in Unbinding The Book are: Carlin Brown, Callum Copley, Magz Hall, Laura Jouan, Vince Koloski, Kate Morrell, Noot, Helen Schell, and Aymee Smith.
Here are some films we shot of Aymee Smith and Callum Copley guiding them through their projects for Unbinding The Book:

Unbinding the Book will exhibit at the Whitechapel Gallery as part of the London Art Book Fair 26-28th September 2014 before going on tour to the US.
